The Whitney Restaurant is located in Detroit, Michigan.
The Whitney Mansion in Detroit has been a home, a hospice, and is currently a restaurant that boasts opulent dining rooms and a grand feel throughout the 22,000-foot property.
The Whitney Mansion was built in 1894 by David Whitney Jr and is located in Detroit. It’s estimated to have cost $400,000, which translates to $9.5 million in today’s money, and has had a further $11 million spent on furniture and interior.
It’s a grand building with many supernatural stories to tell. David Whitney Jr’s wife died during the house’s construction and he went on to marry her sister, who also died in the house. Just four years after the house was complete, David then died in the house and his ghost is one of the most commonly sighted.
Paranormal investigators Kathleen Tedsen and Beverlee Rydel, the authors behind the book, “The Haunted Travels of Michigan,” paid a special visit to the mansion, featuring the Whitney on the cover and first chapter of the book.
“It was a really cool moment because it was a nice publication that had some authenticity and some real research behind it,” said Liebler.
Eventually, the book fell into the hand of the Syfy channel’s hit show, Ghost Hunters (GH). A little over a year ago today, Ghost Hunters came to the Whitney and performed a paranormal investigation, airing the footage on an episode called, “Phantom for the First Course.”
“They brought in millions of dollars of equipment,” Liebler exclaimed. “I don’t know exactly what any of it did, but it looked really cool!”
During their investigation, GH found a few instances of what they refer to as “response.” Liebler attests to the rarity of the situation. According to the Ghost Hunters website, the team picked up a female voice at the same time hearing footsteps and odd noises. A cameraman also caught a floating light moving around the mansion.
“It was great for us to celebrate that history and we believe that if there’s a ghost or a spirit here, it’s a friendly one who’s protective of the house, who loves the house, and who wants to be here because of their affinity of the house, not for any other reason,” said Liebler.
